“…For their detection and identification the gangliosides were sprayed on silica gel 60 (alumium support; Merck, Darmstadt, Germany) forming a 5 rnm line; Linomat I11 (Camag, Mutenz, Switzerland) was employed. The chromatographic run was performed using the solvent chloroform : methanol : 0.02Y0 aqueous CaCI, (60 : 40 : 9, v/v/ v) for 50 min at room temperature (Ritter et al, 1985). The chromatogram was made visible by resorcinol-HC1 spray (Svennerholm, 1957) and heating at 110°C for 15 min.…”

“…The increase primarily is due to an elevation of GM3 [41] but in a number of cases (human melanomas, Hodgkin's disease, colon and uterus carcinoma) serum was found to contain appreciable amounts of GD3, which is much lower or absent in normal serum [13, 431. To what extent the higher circulating GM3 and GD3 levels in cancer patients actually are due to shedding from the tumor surface is not known and other sources may also be considered. It has, for example, been shown that macrophages release enhanced amounts of GD3 after stimulation [44].…”
