Cytotoxic Action of Acetyl-11-keto-β-Boswellic Acid (AKBA) on Meningioma Cells

Abstract: Acetyl-11-keto-beta-boswellic acid (AKBA) is a naturally occurring pentacyclic triterpene isolated from the gum resin exudate of the tree Boswellia serrata (frankincense). Because pentacyclic triterpenes have antiproliferative and cytotoxic effects against different tumor types, we investigated whether AKBA would act in a similar fashion on primary human meningioma cell cultures. Primary cell cultures were established from surgically removed meningioma specimens. The number of viable cells in the absence/prese… Show more

“…Along these lines, AKBA antagonized TNFα-induced phosphorylation of PKB/Akt and p38 MAPK in human myeloid KBM-7 cells [76]. On the other hand, AKBA (IC 50 = 15 µM) even prevented ERK1/2 phosphorylation and cell motility in PDGF-primed meningioma cells [77]. Since the Ras-ERK route transmits survival signals in tumorigenic cells [78], ERK inhibition could at least partly explain the anti-proliferative effects of AKBA observed in this study [79].…”

“…1-6) These acids have also been shown to possess potential chemopreventive effects, e.g., these inhibited growth of brain tumor 7) and meningioma cells, 8) and induced apoptosis in human leukemia 9) and hepatoma cells. 10) In view of the pharmacological importance of the natural compounds derived from Boswellia resin, 1,6) we were especially interested to undertake investigation on the constituents of Boswellia resin in order to evaluate their further pharmacological potentials.…”

“…In addition to these antiinflammatory indications, BAs have been reported to negatively influence the growth and differentiation of tumor cells, causing chemo-preventive effects [6]. Thus, BAs induce apoptosis of brain tumor cell lines [7], meningioma cells [8], rat gliomas [9], liver and colon cancer cell lines [10], and leukemia cells [11]. Caspase-8 [10], topoisomerases [11], and the p42/44 mitogen activated protein kinase (MAPK) pathway [8] have been suggested as intermediate molecules for the apoptotic effects of BAs.…”
