Cytotoxic Components of Pereskia bleo (Kunth) DC. (Cactaceae) Leaves

Abstract: Dihydroactinidiolide (1) and a mixture of sterols [campesterol (2), stigmasterol (3) and β-sitosterol (4)], together with the previously isolated individual compounds β-sitosterol (4), 2,4-di-tert-butylphenol (5), α-tocopherol (6), phytol (7) were isolated from the active ethyl acetate fraction of Pereskia bleo (Kunth) DC. (Cactaceae) leaves. Cytotoxic activities of the above mentioned compounds against five human carcinoma cell lines, namely the human nasopharyngeal epidermoid carcinoma cell line (KB), human … Show more

“…Report have shown that 1,2-benzenediol possess antimicrobials as well as antiplatelet 25,26 activity. Phenol, 2,4-bis (1, 1-dimethylethyl)-has also been reported in Scolopendra subspinispes with strong antioxidant activity, 28 Pereskia bleo with anticancer activity, 29 and strain of Pseudomonas monteilii PsF84 with antifungal activity, 30 Additionally, vitamin E identified two times at different retention times in this study is a well known antioxidant compound used for the treatment of various illnesses while N-Acetyl-Alpha-D-glucosamine has been used as safe alternative therapies for osteoarthritis,…”

“…Vanillin, a widely used flavouring agent, is also reported to successfully inhibit proliferation of HT-29 colon cancer cells by inducing apoptosis (Ho et al, 2009). Studies on phytol report significant cytotoxicity on nasopharyngeal carcinoma (KB) cell line (23 µg mL -1 ) (Malek et al, 2009).…”

“…However, there is no consistency in the positive controls used in the empirical studies. Some studies include work on CCD841 normal human colon epithelial cells [36,47], while others include work on 5-Fluorouracil [46,47], doxorubicin [45], or cisplatin [38] as positive control. Cytotoxic screening results from the studies listed in Table 3 and Table 4 showed that effects on colon cancer were only moderate as compared to other cells lines tested.…”

“…Meanwhile, some studies investigated the cytotoxic effects of not only the crude extracts and fractions, but also tested the isolated compounds [38,40,45]. Among the studies reported, the same group showed a more thorough investigation of the species selected.…”
