Cytotoxicity Activities in Local Justicia gendarussa Crude Extracts against Human Cancer Cell Lines

Abstract: The present study was designed to evaluate the cytotoxic activity of Justicia gendarussa methanolic leaf extracts from five different locations in Johor and also two standards flavonoids (naringenin and kaempferol) as these two compounds were detected in the chromatogram. In this study, leaf extracts and compounds were tested against various human cancer cell lines (HT-29, HeLa and BxPC-3) by using MTT assay. The results showed that methanolic leaf extracts from Mersing and kaempferol were very toxic against B… Show more

“…f.) can be found wild or cultivated in Indonesia, India, China, Malaysia, Sri Lanka, the Philippines, and Bangladesh. The leaves of this plant have been reported for anti-angiogenic [1], antioxidant [2], antibactericidal [3], antifungal [4], anti-arthritic [5], anti-inflammatory and antinociceptive [6], antisickling [7], anthelmintic [8], cytotoxicity [9], larvicidal, and adulticidal activities [10]. In addition, its aerial parts showed in vitro HIV type 1 reverse transcriptase inhibitor [11], antiinflammatory and analgesic [12], sedative, and hypnotic activities [13].…”

“…However, the methanol extract of J. gendarussa leaves from the Mersing region was toxic to BxPC-3 cells, HeLa cells, MDA-MB-468 and MDA-MB-231 cells with the CC 50 values of 16 μg/ml, 5 μg/ml, 23 μg/ml, and 40 μg/ml respectively. 6,7 The leaves of J. gendarussa plants contain a substituted aromatic amine, 8 flavonoid glycosides including gendarusin A and B 2 , and justidrusamide alkaloids A, B, C, and D. 9 Male contraceptive activity has been attributed to gendarusin A and B isolated from the n-butanol fraction of J. gendarussa leaves. 2 Flavonoids are antioxidants which can protect cells from oxidative stress.…”
