Cytotoxicity and Antiproliferation of Phycocyanin from Spirulina platensis Extract on WiDr Colon Cancer Cell Line

Abstract: Phycocyanin from Spirulina platensis extract has anticancer activity against various types of cancer cell cultures. However study about its effect on colon cancer cell lines, especially the WiDr, has not been reported before. This study aimed to reveal the anticancer activity of phycocyanin from Spirulina platensis extract on WiDr cells. The research was an in vitro experimental study, with the investigation on cytotoxicity also antiproliferation as the anticancer parameters. Both cytotoxicity and antiprolifer… Show more

“…In vitro, it represents the concentration of a substance or drug necessary for 50% inhibition [ 45 ]. As a result of the high IC50 value (1274 ppm), RGE's cytotoxicity on UC-MSCs can be categorized as virtually non-toxic (>500 ppm), similar to previous research on another substance [ 23 ].…”

“…Different solvents (water, ethanol, methanol, DMSO, hexane, and petroleum ether) have been used to prepare Spirulina extracts for antioxidant, anticancer, antimicrobial, antiproliferative properties, protective effects against apoptotic cell death, and neuroprotective effects analysis due to differences in solubility of the various bioactive compounds [ 3 , 7 , 15 , 16 , 17 , 18 , 19 , 20 , 21 ]. For example, phycobiliproteins are soluble in water, whereas phenolic compounds and biologically active phytochemical substances such as sterols, tannins, flavonoids, reducing sugars, anthraquinone, chlorophyll-a, carotenoid pigments, and tocopherol have a higher solubility in alcohols.…”

“…The characteristic color of algal cells is primarily determined by the dominant type of pigment (photosynthesis) contained by the algae. For example, the Chlorella species have a lot of chlorophyll pigment so that their cells are green in color (Helena et al 2020;Sathasivam et al 2018;Zhuang et al 2021;Andersen and Lewin 2018), and the Porpyridium species are reddish in color because they predominantly contain phycoerythrin pigment (Putri et al 2020). Microalgae are unicellular microorganisms that can produce various types of carotenoids through photosynthesis.…”
