Abstract: BACKGROUND: Dimethyl sulphoxide (DMSO, a small strongly polarized amphiphilic molecule) is used as a cryoprotector due to its possibility to easily penetrate cell membranes and to form strong H-bonds with water molecules, preventing by that arising of aqueous crystals.
