Drill string torsional and longitudinal oscillation can significantly reduce axial drag in horizontal drilling. An improved theoretical model for the analysis of the frictional force was proposed based on microscopic contact deformation theory and a bristle model. The established model, an improved dynamic friction model established for drill strings in a wellbore, was used to determine the relationship of friction force changes and the drill string torsional vibration. The model results were in good agreement with the experimental data, verifying the accuracy of the established model. The analysis of the influence of drilling mud properties indicated that there is an approximately linear relationship between the axial friction force and dynamic shear and viscosity. The influence of drill string torsional oscillation on the axial friction force is discussed. The results indicated that the drill string transverse velocity is a prerequisite for reducing axial friction. In addition, low amplitude of torsional vibration speed can significantly reduce axial friction. Then, increasing the amplitude of transverse vibration speed, the effect of axial reduction is not significant. In addition, by involving general field drilling parameters, this model can accurately describe the friction behavior and quantitatively predict the frictional resistance in horizontal drilling.

Drag reduction technologies mainly include the mechanical method and the chemical method. Mechanical drag reduction technologies are widespread in the drilling field due to their environmental friendliness and ease of use. Vibration technologies are among some of the most-used mechanical drag reduction technologies. However, various types of vibration tools have the negative effect of obstructing the promotion and application of mechanical drag reduction technologies. This paper widely investigated the types and applications of vibration tools. A drilling agitator system and slider drilling technology were included. The structure and mechanism of the vibration tool were studied. A multiscale friction model was proposed based on the Dahl model according to the drilling environment. The model was verified using experimental data. The multiscale friction model was used to analyze the drag reduction mechanism and the effect of different kinds of vibration technologies. Simulations demonstrated that vibration technologies can effectively reduce the axial friction of the drill string. Longitudinal vibration can reduce the axial friction such that the dependence of the reduced coefficient of friction on the reduced velocity does not change significantly after the reduced oscillation amplitude exceeds the critical value of one. Axial friction decreased with the increasing amplitude of the radial vibration. However, the reduction effect has no relationship with the rate of penetration (ROP). Torsional vibration and rocking motion can reduce the axial friction force. When the oscillation amplitude increases, the axial friction decreases. The reduction effect of slider drilling technology is better than torsional vibration and two other technologies in terms of friction reduction.

The recently-developed magnetorheological elastomer (MRE) base isolator can provide an instant change in the shear modulus and damping property under applied magnetic field, which makes it as an ideal device for the semi-active control in buildings and bridges. Previous studies show that this new device is featured with its nonlinear and hysteretic responses, and it is necessary to sufficiently understand its behaviour when adopting this device in control system. Although there are several models presented to predict the hysteresis of MRE base isolator, they are always suffered from some application limitations, e.g. high computation demand or complex model. To better interpret this complicated feature of the device, this work presents an improved LuGre friction model, which has been successfully used in modelling other magnetorheological device i.e. MR damper. In addition, an improved fruit fly optimization algorithm (IFFOA) is also proposed to identify the model parameters. In the improved algorithm, a transfer factor based on a self-adaptive step is added together with a three-dimensional searching space. This improvement can enhance the convergence rate of the algorithm and avoid the local optimum. Furthermore, to reduce the complexity of the model, the local and global parameter sensitivity analyses are conducted for model simplification. Eventually, the experimental measurements of device displacement, velocity and shear force are used to evaluate the performance of the proposed model and IFFOA.
