Daily Disposable Contact Lenses versus Spectacles in Teenagers

Abstract: The daily disposable lenses used in this study are suitable for vision correction for teenagers, offering improvements in QoL measures during the first month of wear, including appearance, satisfaction, activities, and peer perceptions, without negatively impacting vision or eye health. Teenagers were able to handle contact lenses with the same amount of confidence as spectacles.

“…Contact lenses are superior to spectacles in terms of visual field and optical aberration. Contact lens users might also be less distressed, which could contribute to the differences in sleep quality since the daily disposable contact lenses offered improvements in QOL measures without negatively impacting vision or eye health and benefits of contact lenses were appearance, satisfaction, activities, and peer perceptions compared with spectacles 52 53 54 . In addition, sleep and mood disorders in contact lens users might have been underestimated in the present study since dry eye patients were excluded.…”

“…Plowright et al randomized subjects (aged 13–19 years) with no previous contact lens wear experience to daily disposable soft contact lenses or spectacles for 6 months. 8 A total of 110 teenagers were enrolled; 13 discontinued before study completion, 10 from the contact lens group and 3 from the spectacle group ( P = .04). No serious adverse events occurred during the study, although a 19-year-old discontinued the study at month 3 because of a contact lens–induced peripheral ulcer (CLPU) and subsequent topical medication (chloramphenicol).…”
