Daily estimates of aerosol optical thickness over land surface based on a directional and temporal analysis of SEVIRI MSG visible observations

Abstract: [1] This paper presents an innovative method for obtaining a daily estimate of a qualitycontrolled aerosol optical thickness (AOT) of a vertical column of the atmosphere over the continents. Because properties of land surface are more stationary than the atmosphere, the temporal dimension is exploited for simultaneous retrieval of the surface and aerosol bidirectional reflectance distribution function (BRDF) coming from a kerneldriven reflectance model. Off-zenith geometry of illumination enhances the forward … Show more

“…For example, it is successfully employed in retrievals of single-view AVHHR (Stowe et al, 1997;Mishchenko et al, 1999;Higurashi and Nakajima, 1999), TOMS (Torres et al, 1998), MODIS Tanré et al, 1997;Remer et al, 2005), etc. At the same time, applying the same methodology for processing observations from imagers with multi-viewing capabilities, such as MISR Martonchik et al, 1998;Kahn et al, 2007Kahn et al, , 2009, SEVIRI (Govaerts et al, 2010;Wagner et al, 2010;Carrer et al, 2010), or POLDER (Deuzé et al, 2001;Herman et al, 2005;Tanré et al, 2011), reveals some deficiencies of the look-up table retrievals. The multidirectional observations have notably higher sensitivity to the details of aerosol and surface properties, and the retrieval of larger number of parameters is expected.…”

“…Approximative equations have been developed before computers were widely available (Hammad and Chapman, 1939;Sobolev, 1972). With regard to the growing size and frequency of remote sensing datasets, approximative and computationally fast RTMs are becoming relevant again (Kokhanovsky, 2006;Katsev et al, 2010;Carrer et al, 2010). In particular, RTMs of the vegetation canopy and further algorithms that exploit data from imaging spectroscopy instruments often rely on fast atmospheric RTM calculations.…”

“…Bernard et al (2011) evaluated this method, confirming that this method is suitable for most Europe areas. Carrer et al (2010) put forward daily estimates of AOD over land based on a directional and temporal analysis of visible observations from MSG/SEVIRI. Govaerts et al (2010) developed a joint retrieval method of surface reflectance and AOD from MSG/SEVIRI observations with an optimal estimation approach.…”
