Daily Maximum Erythemal Dose Rates in the Tropics

Abstract: The maximum erythemal dose rate (EDRmax) at the Earth's surface tends to occur at local noon. However, clouds can make the timing of EDRmax significantly away from local noon. In fact, EDRmax and its time of occurrence depend mainly on the solar zenith angle at noon (SZAn), site's altitude, the total ozone column (TOC), cloud cover, cloud genera and aerosols. This work depicts the daily incidence of EDRmax for Belo Horizonte (19.92°S, 43.94°W, 858 m a.s.l.) in the Southern Hemisphere tropics for a period of fi… Show more

“…3). As was noted in previous studies, these UVI values are typical to subtropical latitude regions (Corrêa and Pires, 2013;Silva et al, 2019). In Arica, summers are hot arid are relatively cloudy, while winters are cold humid with generally clear skies.…”

“…As all situations under CFS conditions refer to skies of null cloud cover observed through the LSV images, Diff 305 and Diff 380 exemplified in Table 4 represent mainly the effects of AP on UVR OMI values caused by the difficult treatment aerosols yet require from OMI's algorithm, especially boundary layer aerosols. Incremented values of irradiance from satellite data has been shown by many studies (2,7,8,10,15,33) with a similar average value from around 20% (for 305 nm) like the average percent difference in Table 4. Some studies propose corrections in satellite UVR measurements for boundary layer aerosols, reducing that increment to about 9% (34).…”

“…Neither the LSV images nor GUV's measurements showed any evidence of REE that could have produced higher values of UVR GUV , causing such negative minima. Thus, they probably resulted from a homogeneous, plane-parallel layer cloud in OMI's algorithm thicker than the Cu+Sc cloud cover over the GUVs during the OMI overpass time (19,33).…”
