Daily Mood, Partner Support, Sexual Interest, and Sexual Activity Among Adolescent Women.

Abstract: The main objective of this study was to examine day-to-day associations of coitus, sexual interest, partner emotional support, negative mood, and positive mood among adolescent women. Diaries assessed partner interactions, sexual activity, substance use, and mood. Participants were 146 adolescent women who provided 28,376 diary days. Correlates of coitus on a given day included age, increased coital frequency in previous week, coitus on the previous day, partner support, increased same-day sexual interest, and… Show more

“…Adolescent data clearly link sexual interest to sexual behaviors. In a daily diary analysis of sexual behavior of adolescent women by our group, higher levels of sexual interest on a given day was independently associated with increased likelihood of coitus on that day (Fortenberry, Temkit, Tu, Graham, Katz & Orr, 2005). However, little is known about the impact of hormonal contraception on sexual interest among adolescents.…”

“…All mood and sexual interest items used a 5 point Likerttype response scale ranging from "not at all" to "all day." Sexual interest was measured by a single item with the above 5 point response scale, asking whether the participant was interested in having sex (Fortenberry et al, 2005). Positive and negative mood for first diary date per participant had a Pearson's correlation coefficient of -0.47.…”

“…Our study indirectly suggests the need for improved assessment of condom use, e.g. observations of participants putting condoms on models, asking about slippage and breakage and sexual event-specific use [66][67][68][69][70][71], use of audio-assisted J. E. Mantell et al…”

“…Even more detailed types of self-reports are possible. Fortenberry and his colleagues are now collecting longitudinal daily diary data on a relatively small sample of female adolescents to look at predictors of vaginal sex based on psycho-social variables such as the respondent's "mood" and level of sexual arousal, sexual partner variables, parental influence variables, and other contextual features like time of day (Fortenberry et al, 2005(Fortenberry et al, , 2006. While their diary method collects an impressive array of micro-data on the respondent (and up to 5 of her sexual partners), one striking result is that for most of the daily diary records, the adolescent respondents do not have sex.…”
