Daily oscillation of gene expression associated with nacreous layer formation

Abstract: Three major organic matrix components, nacrein, MSI60 and N16 have been reported from the nacreous layer of Japanese pearl oyster, Pinctada fucata. Though several in vitro experiments have been carried out to elucidate the functions of these molecules details have not yet been clarified. In this report, we tempt to clarify the gene expression levels encoding the above three proteins between samples of 1) summer and winter seasons and 2) ocean and aquarium environments by using realtime polymerase chain reactio… Show more

“…Differences have been reported in expression patterns of these genes encoding several shell matrix proteins between mantle and pearlsac epithelial cells, and among pearl-sac epithelial cells forming different types of pearls (Takeuchi and Endo 2005;Wang et al 2009;Inoue et al 2010Inoue et al , 2011aInoue et al , 2011b. Daily oscillation in the gene expression is also reported (Miyazaki et al 2008). However, there is still limited information on the relationships between morphology and gene expression of outer epithelial cells or pearl-sac epithelial cells.…”

“…In the mantle of the pearl oyster P. fucata, the levels of expression of MSI60 and N16 genes were higher in winter season, while no seasonal variation was found in the Nacrein expression level (Miyazaki et al 2008). Nacrein contains two anhydrase carbonic anhydrase domains and GXN repeat domains, thus it is supposed to have a dual function in both CO 2 hydration and CaCO 3 interactions (Le Roy et al 2012).…”
