Daily Participation in Sports and Students' Sexual Activity

Abstract: Students as young as middle school age who participate in sports daily may have an elevated risk for STDs and pregnancy. Health professionals should counsel middle school athletes about sexual risk reduction, given that young students may find it particularly difficult to obtain contraceptives, STD testing and prevention counseling.

“…In our study, boys were found to be more likely to engage in sexual intercourse than girls. This finding is consistent with previous studies from other countries, including the Netherlands [31] and the United States [32][33][34]. However, this discrepancy may be explained by the social context emphasizing chastity for women, which may lead girls to under-report their sexual experience, whereas boys may tend to over-report their sexual experience since traditional norms regard sexual prowess as a crucial component of masculinity [35].…”

“…Considering that athletes are more sexually active than non-athletes (6,7), the fact that sex could alter their performance by either physiological or psychological elements (1), and the controversy surrounding this topic, we decided to review the literature on whether precompetition sex influences performance. Thus, the aim of the present study was to summarize original scientific articles studying the effect of sexual activity on athletic performance.…”
