Daily Rhythm of Serum Lipase and α-Amylase Activity in Fed and Fasted Dogs

Abstract: Abstract. The aim of the current study was to investigate the influence of feeding and fasting on the daily rhythm of serum lipase and a-amylase activity in dogs. Fourteen purebred Beagle dogs were housed in individual pens lined with wood shavings under a 12:12 light:dark cycle. The dogs were divided into 2 groups. Group A received normal feeding once a day, and group B was fasted starting 12 hr prior to the first blood collection. Water was available ad libitum. Blood samples were collected every 4 hr for 48… Show more

“…Second, and probably more important, serum amylase activity is influenced by dietary habits, age and circadian rhythm, factors that have not been taken into account in this study (Piccione et al . 2008 ). Although serum amylase activity clearly is associated with AMY2B copy number in dogs, care should thus be taken at this point not to interpret activity measures as a direct indicator of inherited ability to handle starch.…”

“…Low-intensity dim red light can be, therefore, a useful tool for managing animals in the dark without impacting their welfare. Similarly to Bertolucci et al (2008), Piccione et al (2008) investigated the effects of the light cycle and two different feeding schedules on the daily rhythm of serum lipase and a-amylase in 14 purebred Beagles dogs. The dogs were housed in individual pens under the 12:12 light:dark schedule (light on at 08:00 am), with an illuminance of 600 lx (no further details on light type).…”

“…In dog, daily rhythmicity has also been demonstrated in a variety of physiological functions, such as heart rate, blood pressure, bone metabolism, serum hormones and electrolytes, urine excretion, rest/activity, tear production and intraocular pressure and some metabolic parameters (Wong & Klein 1984;Gordon & Lavie 1985;Minten et al 1985;Nishimno et al 1997;Liesegang et al 1999;Piccione et al 2005Piccione et al , 2008Bertolucci et al 2008;Giudice et al 2009;, 2010.…”
