Daily Total Physical Activity and Incident Stroke

Abstract: For Japanese people, moderate levels of total physical activity, particularly achieved by moderate-intensity activities, may be optimal for stroke prevention because excessive vigorous-intensity activities might not be beneficial or even disadvantageous for prevention of hemorrhagic stroke.

“…Our data showed an inverse association between PA and risk of stroke although we were unable to further sub-type cerebrovascular events. Recent data have suggested curvilinear associations for PA and haemorrhage stroke, indicating protection at moderate PA levels and possible increased risk at very high levels of activity; in contrast very high levels of PA was not associated with increased risk of ischemic stroke in Asian populations [ 3 , 14 ], although results may differ in Western cohorts [ 15 ]. Our findings on coronary heart disease suggested a plateau in risk reduction at higher levels of PA.…”

“…Epidemiologic studies have consistently suggested an association between PA and the risk of stroke [ 24 27 ]. PA is recommended to reduce the risk of first-ever and possibly the risk of recurrent stroke [ 24 , 28 30 ].…”

“…Actually, older adults in neighborhoods with poor socioeconomic conditions have a risk for stroke in Japan . Low physical activity is a risk factor for the occurrence of and death due to cancer . It is also well known that moderate physical activity improves metabolic disorder, and prevents cardiovascular and cerebrovascular diseases .…”

“…21 Low physical activity is a risk factor for the occurrence of and death due to cancer. [22][23][24] It is also well known that moderate physical activity improves metabolic disorder, and prevents cardiovascular and cerebrovascular diseases. 22,23,25 The differences in the characteristic of individuals, such as lifestyles, or differences in the definition of low activity might explain difference results in various studies of Japanese older adults.…”
