Damage detection in smart CFRP composites using impedance spectroscopy

Abstract: Smart structures based on carbon fibre reinforced polymers with embedded piezoceramic patches demand and offer permanent and integral monitoring of structural and functional integrity. Electrical impedance spectroscopy is one method that can be implemented in a structural health monitoring system. Experimental investigations with strip-shaped specimens show the close connection between mechanical properties and impedance. An electrical equivalent circuit diagram and electromechanical finite-element model… Show more

“…A constant amplitude sinusoidal electrical current is injected at different frequencies to identify the change in frequency of the impedance (Z) of the sample. EIS has been used in noninvasive material characterization of different composite materials [31,27,33,26] including fibre-reinforced polymers [33]. EIS has also been found to be useful in monitoring the cure of plastics [26] during their manufacturing process.…”

“…Pohl et al [92] implemented an experimental and theoretical investigation to show the effectiveness of the impedance method in monitoring carbon fiber reinforced polymer (CFRP) composites. Damage, which was introduced by the low-speed impact, was detected by changes in the impedance signatures.…”

“…Electro-mechanical impedance based damage detection on CFRP composite laminates was investigated by Pohl et al [34]. Delamination due to impacts was shown to influence the real part of the impedance magnitude and resonant peaks within the spectrum above 1 kHz.…”
