Damage evolution in open-hole laminated composite plates subjected to in-plane loads

Abstract: Damage evolution of notched composite laminates is analysed in this work using a discrete damage model, which estimates matrix damage evolution and fibre failure. The fibre damage is regularized with a Weibull distribution, and a Regula Falsi method has been used to improve numerical convergence. The model is compared and validated with several experimental results taken from the scientific literature, which consider different materials, laminate stacking sequences and specimen geometries. A good correlation h… Show more

“…Interface problems, either, free-surface [5,6], a thermally coupled analysis considering phase-change [7,8], or even, solid mechanics problems with stresses location, damage or plasticity [9,10,11], are promising cases where the use of adaptivity is relevant because thin layers of the full domain contains the most important information of the global behavior of the problem. In this work an adaptive xed-mesh ALE method is used to numerically approximate the sloshing of a rectangular tank partially lled with a domestic oil subjected to a controlled movement generated by a shake table.…”

“…Many structural composite components require the inclusion of open holes to allow the access of electric wires, hydraulic pipes, assembly or maintenance activities. However, the sensitivity of a composite laminate to a notch is dependent on a large number of parameters: laminate size and thickness, notch size and geometry, width/diameter ratios, ply orientation and thickness, machining quality and material properties . All of these factors affect the mechanical properties by changing the extent of damage growth during loading, and interact with each other to enhance the individual effects .…”

“…However, the sensitivity of a composite laminate to a notch shows to be dependent on a large number of parameters, such as laminate size and thickness, notch size and geometry, width/diameter ratios, ply orientation and thickness, machining quality and material properties [1][2][3]. All of these factors affect the mechanical properties by changing the extent of damage growth during loading, and interact with each other to enhance the individual effects [1].…”
