Damage index estimation by analysis of meteorological disasters on film plastic greenhouses

Abstract: This study focuses on the analysis of the effect of meteorological disasters on film plastic greenhouses by typhoons, heavy snow, strong wind, and heavy rain. The data of meteorological disasters from 1998 to 2015 were analyzed on provincial basis to calculate the damage rate depending on the weather cause. The cumulative damage area is 20 279 hm 2 . The damage rates of typhoons, heavy snow, strong wind, and heavy rain are 46.4%, 47.4%, 2.5%, and 3.8%, respectively. The damage index of the greenhouse, which is… Show more

“…Therefore, in addition to the permanent loads (self-weight of structural members, coverage material, fixed equipment), the structure must be built to withstand variable actions, such as wind and loads related to the crop (when applied), storm, hail, and snow (when applied) (Aldrich and Bartok, 1994;von Zabeltitz, 2011). Attention is required when considering accidental actions, given the large number of records of structural damage in greenhouses caused by strong winds and snow, with economic and crop losses, which can lead to the bankruptcy of horticultural companies (Briassoulis et al, 2016;Moriyama et al, 2015;Peña et al, 2020;Ryu et al, 2019;Wang et al, 2021).…”

“…The wind pressure co-efficients for Evenspan, Three-quarter, Peach and Mono-span greenhouse structures were measured in the wind tunnel according to wind direction, roof slope and the radius of curvature of the roof. Ryu et al (2019) conducted a study on damage index estimation by analysis of meteorological disasters on film plastic greenhouses. Effect of typhoons, heavy snow, strong wind, and heavy rain on plastic film greenhouse were analyzed.…”

“…Typhoon accommodating heavy rainfall damage Korean agriculture during summer, in particular, property damage due to heavy rainfall accounted for about 70% of all agricultural meteorological disasters [ 15 ]. In spite of gradual disaster mitigation and prevention measures, meteorological disasters occur every year under various conditions and intensities in the case of heavy rainfall and typhoons [ 16 ]. Forage production has been also damaged severely by lodging [ 17 ].…”
