Thermoelastic stress analysis using arrays of small, low-cost detectors has the potential to be used in structural health monitoring. However, evaluation of the collected data is challenging using traditional methods, due to the lower resolution of these sensors, and the complex loading conditions experienced. An alternative method has been developed, using image decomposition to generate feature vectors which characterize the uncalibrated map of the magnitude of the thermoelastic effect. Thermal data have been collected using a state-of-the-art photovoltaic effect detector and lower cost, lower thermal resolution microbolometer detectors, during crack propagation induced by both constant amplitude and frequency loading, and by idealized flight cycles. The Euclidean distance calculated between the feature vectors of the initial and current state can be used to indicate the presence of damage. Cracks of the order of 1 mm in length can be detected and tracked, with an increase in the rate of change of the Euclidean distance indicating the onset of critical crack propagation. The differential feature vector method therefore represents a substantial advance in technology for monitoring the initiation and propagation of cracks in structures, both in structural testing and in-service using low-cost sensors.

This paper presents a structural health monitoring (SHM) methodology for detecting damage in a composite bonded repair. The application of guided wave based techniques in a step-sanded bonded repair under operational and environmental load is thoroughly investigated. A two step damage detection and localization algorithm is presented, were in the first level the path damage indices (PDIs) for each transducer pair is calculated. The PDIs are then compared to a set threshold (based on the environmental and operational conditions) to increase the reliability of damage detection while reducing false alarm. In addition, a self-diagnosis approach based on electro-mechanical impedance (EMI) measure is proposed to identify the faulty sensors prior to the diagnosis. Once the transducer pairs with possible damage in their path has been selected, the second level of the proposed methodology is damage localization. To address the challenge of edge reflection, complex geometrical shape and layup of the repair patch which introduced anisotropy to the wave propagation, a novel damage detection based on probability imaging technique is proposed. The methodology is developed based on assigning probabilities of damage to the Minimal Intersection Score (MIS) to reduce the path saturation related to each path having the same probability of damage being located anywhere along it. The proposed method, uses a smart sub-division technique based on Voronoi Tessellation which is adaptable to any shape (circular, rectangular, elliptical). The reliability of the proposed method is then demonstrated with experimental results on a composite step-sanded repair subjected to impact damage under vibration and temperature variations, and the choice of input parameters such as wave form and excitation frequency on the probability of detecting damage is demonstrated.

The need for non-destructive testing/structural health monitoring (SHM) is becoming increasingly important for gas turbine manufacturers. Incipient cracks have to be detected before catastrophic events occur. With respect to condition-based maintenance, the complex and expensive parts should be used as long as their performance or integrity is not compromised. In this study, the main failure modes of turbines are reported. In particular, we focus on the turbine blades, turbine vanes and the transition ducts of the combustion chambers. The existing monitoring techniques for these components, with their own particular advantages and disadvantages, are summarised in this review. In addition to the vibrational approach, tip timing technology is the most used technique for blade monitoring. Several sensor types are appropriate for the extreme conditions in a gas turbine, but besides tip timing, other technologies are also very promising for future NDT/SHM applications. For static parts, like turbine vanes and the transition ducts of the combustion chambers, different monitoring possibilities are identified and discussed.
