Damage to urban buildings in zones of intensities VIII and VII during the Wenchuan earthquake and discussion on some typical damages

Abstract: The outline and typical characteristics of damages to building in Jiangyou city and Anxian county (intensity VIII), Mianyang city and Deyang city (intensity VII) are introduced in the paper. The damage ratios, based on the sample statistics of multi-story brick buildings together with multi-story brick buildings with RC frame at first story (BBF), are presented. Then some typical damages, such as horizontal cricks of brick masonry buildings, X-shaped cricks on the walls under windows, the damages to columns, b… Show more

“…The upper stoerys are normally residences, using masonry walls with more vertical and horizontal walls as the load-bearing system; these are the characteristics of the bottom frame-seismic wall masonry buildings (bfm).). [4]. The information that generate the vulnerability curves of urban and rural areas are available from the survey data of ms damaged buildings in the area affected by the wenchuan earthquake, and the failure probability matrix was established [5,6].…”

“…1f. The latter failure mode is preferable with respect to the first one, since the building shows a higher robustness as a result of intact alternate paths for the vertical loading [4]. In order to guarantee this failure mode under the seismic load, vertical piers should be enhanced to make the horizontal spandrels be damaged firstly.…”

“…Findings from the on-site work conducted in the post-earthquake period by the Unità Operativa di Ingegneria Sismica of the Dipartimento di Ingegneria delle Strutture, delle Acque e del Terreno (DISAT-UOIS) are presented. The paper follows the mainstream of other works present in the literature, which describe the scenario of structural damages induced by other destructive seismic events of the past decades, such as the earthquakes which stuck the Irpinia [9] and Molise region [10] in Italy, the town of Pyrgos [11] and the Lefkada island [12] in Greece, the Ağri province in Turkey [13,14], the Northridge community in the United States [15], the Kobe-Osaka region in Japan [16], the Wenchuan county in China [17,18], the south-east Asia [19]. Similarly to many of these studies, the paper is based on an early field reconnaissance, and aims to characterize the particular earthquake signature, as well as the typical structural response, from the recurrences in the seismic effects on buildings of different typologies.…”
