Damaging biting behaviors in intensively kept rearing gilts: The effect of jute sacks and relations with production characteristics1

Abstract: Pigs may display biting behavior directed at pen mates, resulting in body damage such as tail wounds. We assessed the suitability of jute sacks (hung vertically at wall) to reduce biting behaviors and tail wounds in rearing gilts. Additionally, we assessed several characteristics of different types of tail biters. Tail docked rearing gilts originated from 72 litters, which were kept in partly slatted pens with jute sacks (J) or barren control pens (CON; 36 litters per treatment). Tail and ear damage were obser… Show more

“…Three such incidences were logged. In accordance with expectations (Feddes and Fraser, 1994l;Ursinus et al, 2014b), the pigs interacted much more with the destructible jute sack than with the indestructible chain ( Figure 6.4). In addition, on the day after anaesthesia AMI values seemed depressed.…”

“…Piglets that showed a less fearful response pre-weaning in a novel environment test ('Novel Box Test') performed less tail biting later in life when housed in barren pens (Ursinus et al, 2014a). Chewing propensity at an early age has been tested as a personality trait that could predispose pigs for tail or ear biting later in life (Beattie et al, 2005).…”
