Abstract. The dynamic response of a maxillary molar with periodontal ligament (PDL) was investigated to explore the dynamic behavior of the tooth. Three-dimensional (3D) finite element model of a maxillary molar with periodontium was constructed using CT image-reconstruction. The modal vibration of the maxillary molar in the periodontal system was performed at first, and then the dynamic response of the tooth under an impact loading was calculated and compared with the results of the different periodontal attachments in order to assess the condition of the periodontium. The first four modes were dominant in the modal vibration. The resonant frequency of the maxillary molar under the impact loading was close to the frequency of the second mode in the modal analysis. The resonant frequency decreased gradually with the loss of alveolar bone, while the resonant amplitude increased nonlinearly. The resonant frequency and amplitude of the maxillary molar can be used to describe the loss of alveolar bone and the condition of periodontium.

Aim: The present study aimed to analyze the stress distribution in the dentoalveolar structures of a maxillary central incisor submitted to two situations of impact loading. Materials and Methods: The following loading forces were applied using a three-dimensional finite element model: a force of 500 N at an angle of 45° on the buccal surface of the crown and a 2000 N force acting in the same direction and surface of the tooth. Results: Harmful stress was observed in the second situation, suggesting damage to both the tooth and adjacent tissue. However, the damage found in soft tissues such as dental pulp, was negligible. Conclusion: Injuries resulting from the traumatic situations were more damaging to the integrity of the tooth and its associated hard-tissue structures. Uniterms: Tooth injuries. Finite element analysis. Biomechanics. Computing methodologies. Threedimensional imaging.

“…Additionally, adding frictional boundaries conditions between teeth and active ligations for orthodontic appliances will continue to increase the accuracy of these models. Three dimensional dynamic simulations for assessing tooth injury, similar to those demonstrated in 2D studies (Huang et al, 2006;Miura and Maeda, 2008), should be reevaluated. While techniques will continually be optimized to improve numerical approximations, this does not negate the value of finite element techniques in dentistry.…”
