Damping properties of interpenetrating polymer networks of polyurethane-modified epoxy and polyurethanes

Abstract: ABSTRACT:Interpenetrating polymer networks (IPNs) were prepared from polyurethane (PU)-modified epoxy with different molecular weight of polyol and polyurethanes based on the mixture of polydiol and polytriol by a one-shot method. Two types of PU-modified epoxy: PU-crosslinked epoxy and PU-dangled epoxy were synthesized, and the effects of the different molecular weights of polyol in the PU-modified epoxy/PU IPNs on the dynamic mechanical properties, morphology, and damping behavior were investigated. The resu… Show more

“…In order to improve the thermal properties of polyurethanes, researchers modify them mostly by incorporating nanoparticles [7,8] and proteins [9] or by changing the amount and type of monomers used for their synthesis [10]. To improve the mechanical properties of polyurethanes, often other polymers are used as modifiers for example epoxy resins [11][12][13][14]. Polyurethanes prepared with the use of suitable raw materials are biocompatible and may be biodegradable-this can be designed dependently on material destination [15,16].…”

“…Numerous favourable attributes, for example enhanced damping properties [9][10][11][12], have been discovered and extensively analysed. Several kinds of polymer resin pairs were 3 investigated, such as epoxy (EP) with polyurethanes (PU) [9,[13][14][15], EP with unsaturated polyester (UP) [10,16], PU with UP resin [17,18], and EP with vinyl ester (VE) resin [11,19,20]. Hybrid resins have great damping abilities and some of them also showed synergistic mechanical properties.…”

“…Additional flexibility and toughness may be achieved, as a result. Due to the above mentioned phenomena, crack propagation in hybrid resin is hindered by lots of bounds and molecule chain entanglements [1,[6][7][8].…”

“…1), the result can be improved damping properties, and enhanced toughness can be also reached. These hybrid resin matrix materials can be used in field of aircraft, automotive and sports equipment industries as well as high enegy absorbing structural material [6,8,9].…”
