Dancing With Parkinson's Disease: The SI-ROBOTICS Study Protocol

Abstract: Introduction: Parkinson's disease (PD) is one of the most frequent causes of disability among older people, characterized by motor disorders, rigidity, and balance problems. Recently, dance has started to be considered an effective exercise for people with PD. In particular, Irish dancing, along with tango and different forms of modern dance, may be a valid strategy to motivate people with PD to perform physical activity. “…So far, diverse clinical trials protocols have been recently developed with the purpose of estimating the motor and functional benefits of RAT and VR-based therapy in different clinical populations [76][77][78][79][80][81][82][83]. Nevertheless, it must be noted that for the most, although factors like patient's mental status or technology acceptance were investigated, these were considered as secondary outcomes essentially.…”

“…Twelve service themes divided into three different settings (hospital, home, social housing) were highlighted (Fig. 1); these are not the main focus of this article but are thoroughly described in other papers related to Si-Robotics project (Bevilacqua et al 2021).…”

“…Dance is an alternative form of physical activity that is defined as a movement of the body to rhythm, normally with music (Douka et al, 2019; Mackrell, 2020). Dance is likely less boring than other types of physical activity, motivating older adults to engage in this form of physical activity (Bevilacqua et al, 2021). Thus, examining the overall effects of dance on depression (the focus of this study) has utility for clinicians.…”
