“…This behaviour of the fast ejecta caused by the projectile geometry might be visible in the early crater ejecta plume. Information about the DART crater ejecta plume will be available and will be provided by LICIACube (Cheng et al, 2020;Dotto et al, 2021). LICIA (Light Italian Cubesat for Imaging of Asteroids) is the Italian Space Agency (ASI) contribution to the DART mission.…”

“…We assume that the transition to elastic waves takes place at a distance from impact that is smaller than the crater radius, and as done in Section 4, we scale properties of the travel seismic pulse from the crater radius, at a distance r = R cr . The radius of the impact crater on Dimorphos that will be caused by the DART impact has been estimated with scaling laws and ranges from R cr ∼ 4 to 45 m, with value that depend upon the substrate material properties (Cheng et al, 2020). For a fiducial value we adopt R cr = 10 m.…”

“…The first term on the righthand side is the momentum imparted directly by the impactor P i ; the second term is the component of the momentum imparted by the escaping ejecta that acts normal to the surface; the third term is the component of the momentum imparted by the escaping ejecta that acts parallel to the surface, positive in the downrange direction. If the net momentum imparted to the target by the escaping ejecta can be assumed to act along the surface normal vector (i.e., ψ m = 0) then the third term can be neglected (Feldhacker et al, 2017;Cheng et al, 2020).…”

“…The change in momentum caused by the DART impact will be approximated from the circular Keplerian motion of the Didymos system (Cheng et al, 2020) and therefore only the momentum transfer in the direction of the target's orbital velocity will be measured by the DART mission. In an ideal scenario, the DART impactor would strike Dimorphos's surface vertically (normal incidence; θ = 90) in the direction of its orbital velocity.…”
