Darwin’s Quick Tips for Living a Richer Life

Abstract: This book was written as something of a guidebook for both researchers and for people in general. This chapter provides guidance for both audiences. For researchers in the behavioral sciences, guidance is provided to think about how the idea of positive evolutionary psychology might help shape one’s research agenda. Specific examples of novel research hypotheses influenced by this approach are provided. And for people in general, specific suggestions for living life, based on the ideas from this book, are spel… Show more

“…The current study was designed to fill an important gap in the literatures related to both the Dark Triad of personality (Paulhus & Williams, 2002) and parental styles (Baumrind, 1967). From an evolutionary perspective, parenting is one of the most significant life domains as it directly bears on long-term reproductive success (see Geher, 2014;Geher & Wedberg, 2020). Further, in recent years, the Dark Triad of personality has emerged as a ubiquitous predictor of various classes of social behaviors.…”

“…CBT, for instance, is oriented towards teaching clients how to apply the principles of cognitive and behavioral theory to their experience of suffering in order to change that experience. While CBT is perhaps currently the most well-known example of psychotherapy based on a model of psychoeducation, many other types of psychoeducation are now available, such as “positive evolutionary psychology,” where principles of evolutionary psychology are taught to clients experiencing relationship difficulties in order to change their perceptions and behaviors, ostensibly in a manner that will lead to more evolutionarily propitious outcomes (Geher & Wedberg, 2019). While any form of psychoeducation may be specifically tailored to a client’s particular problems and concerns, it is ultimately the preestablished knowledge that is applied to a client’s experience in order to change that experience.…”

“…The limited size of these communities inhibited our ancestors' ability to choose their comrades; thus, driven by necessity, characteristics such as high levels of reciprocal altruism developed to foster and maintain social connections within group members (Geher et al, 2019). Failure to get along with group mates in ancestral times could have led to ostracism, resulting in fewer reproductive mating choices or even death; with such severe consequences, humans seem to have evolved to be hyper-aware of signals of social alienation (Geher & Wedberg, 2020).…”

“…In other words, modern communication systems may be conceptualized as highly evolutionarily mismatched from communication systems that were typical in ancestral contexts. Such modern communications, such as social media, may, thus, be problematic in ways that are hard for our modern minds to realize (Geher & Wedberg, 2020).…”
