Green synthesis of gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) is gaining attention of researchers because of their varieties of biomedical and environmental applications. This study reported the novel eco‐friendly synthesis of AuNPs using green macroalgae Halimeda macroloba (HM) extract and evaluate their photocatalytic potential. The green synthesized H. macroloba mediated gold nanoparticles (HM‐AuNPs) was characterized using UV–visible spectrophotometry, Fourier‐transform infrared (FT‐IR) spectroscopy, transmission electron microscope (TEM), scanning electron microscope‐energy dispersive spectroscopy, x‐ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), and particle size distribution (PSD) anlaysis. The UV–visible spectrum shows a sharp intense plasmonic resonance peak at 543 nm. The bioactive compounds present in HM were primarily responsible for the biological reduction of gold ions validated by FT‐IR analysis. XRD analysis proved the crystalline face centered cubic structure of the HM‐AuNPs. The average particle size of 18.72 nm and morphological evidences were obtained from the images from TEM. The metallic form of biosynthesised HM‐AuNPs was confirmed by XPS results with a distinctive binding energy. The photocatalytic degradation ability of the green synthesized HM‐AuNPs was investigated against the methylene blue (MB) and methylene orange (MO) dyes under sunlight irradiation. The HM‐AuNPs exhibited 97.23% and 89.91% photocatalytic activity against MB and MO after 90 min of exposure to sunlight, respectively. The overall results of this research indicate that H. macroloba mediated HM‐AuNPs can be used as an effective option for the degradation of industrial dyes.

BACKGROUNDChitosan (CS), an abundant alkaline polysaccharide, is valued for its biocompatibility, non‐toxicity, and antibacterial properties. However, its limited solubility and modest antioxidant activity constrain its utility. Grafting polyphenols onto chitosan through the use of grafting reactions can enhance both the solubility and bioactivity of chitosan. Among the techniques employed, the free radical grafting method is favored for its simplicity, environmental sustainability, and its effectiveness in preserving biological activity.RESULTSIn this study, chlorogenic acid (CGA) and polydatin (PLD) were conjugated successfully to chitosan by a Vc/H2O2 redox system. Analytical techniques such as ultraviolet‐visible (UV‐visible) spectroscopy, fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy, X‐ray diffraction (XRD), and proton nuclear magnetic resonance (1H NMR) were employed to confirm the formation of covalent bonding between the polyphenol molecules and the chitosan backbone. The novel conjugates displayed superior antioxidant properties in comparison with pristine chitosan, as evidenced by their enhanced 2,2‐diphenyl‐1‐picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) radical, 2,2'‐azinobis‐(3‐ethylbenzothiazoline‐6‐sulfonic acid) (ABTS) radical, and hydroxyl radical scavenging capacities, and Fe2+ reducing power. Both CGA‐CS and PLA‐CS exhibited excellent lipid and protein oxidation inhibition capabilities. Furthermore, the conjugates were shown to have significant antibacterial effects against four common pathogenic bacteria: Pseudomonas fluorescens, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Pseudomonas putida, and Staphylococcus aureus (P < 0.05).CONCLUSIONThe newly synthesized water‐soluble polyphenol‐chitosan conjugates demonstrated remarkable biological activity, particularly CGA‐CS. This study offers new insights and a strong theoretical foundation for developing natural food preservation materials with potential applications in the food industry. © 2024 Society of Chemical Industry.

The increasing resistance of pathogenic microorganisms to conventional antibiotics has led to a growing interest in alternative antimicrobial agents. In this study, the antimicrobial activity (antibacterial and antifungal) of aqueous and methanolic extracts of Halpeh plant and gold nanoparticles synthesized using the extract of this plant was investigated. Additionally, the effect of different concentrations of synthesized gold nanoparticles on the phytochemical properties (antioxidant and reducing ability) of Halpeh plant extract was examined. The results of UV-Vis (Ultraviolet-Visible Spectroscopy), XRD (X-Ray Diffraction Analysis), TEM (Transmission Electron Microscopy), SEM (Scanning Electron Microscopy), and FTIR (Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy) tests on gold nanoparticles confirmed their synthesis. SEM and TEM images showed that the gold nanoparticles were spherical in shape with an average size of 22.89 nm. According to the results, the methanolic extract exhibited significantly higher antibacterial and antifungal activity compared to the aqueous extract, with the maximum inhibition zone diameters observed for Escherichia coli (14 mm) and Aspergillus niger (15 mm). Moreover, the antimicrobial activity of gold nanoparticles showed that these nanoparticles have relatively good ability to inhibit gram-negative bacteria, with the largest inhibition zone diameters observed for Escherichia coli (18 mm) and Aspergillus niger (20 mm). The antioxidant and reducing power activity (phenolic flavonoids content) of Halpeh plant extract treated with different concentrations of synthesized gold nanoparticles increased with increasing nanoparticle concentrations up to 60 ppm (IC50 = 9.94 µg/ml and reducing power = 16.85 mMFe2+/mg sample), and decreased at higher concentrations.
