Data based investigation of the energy metering type, billing and usage of sampled residents of Ota Community in Nigeria

Abstract: Accurate energy metering and billing is a challenge in some developing countries. In Nigeria, the issues of inadequate power generation, transmission and distribution infrastructure are recurrent problems, coupled with inefficient energy metering which is a major problem that results in residential energy consumers being billed unfair energy charges by the Electricity Distribution Companies (DISCOs) for unused energy, and this has been termed “crazy bill”. For the energy sector to be effective, energy bills sh… Show more

“…In certain developing nations, like Nigeria, accurate energy metreing and billing pose challenges due to issues in electricity infrastructure (Sch€ utzeichel, 2022). Improper energy metering is a significant issue, resulting in unfair energy rates for residential consumers (Adekitan et al, 2018). Additionally, variations in electrical equipment, monthly power expenditure, and alternative energy sources complicate the assessment of energy utilisation and management on a household level (Ibitoye, 2013).…”

“…A system aimed at resolving the problem of estimated billing which has been a contentious issue in the Nigeria electricity sector was proposed by Adetokun et al, (2018). The system was able to determine the amount to be paid by unmetered customers because of inadequate electricity meters by the electricity utility company.…”

“…Adequate power supply is a major challenge in Nigeria; the most populous country in Africa due to insufficient energy generation [1,2]. The peak power that was generated on August 31, 2018 stood at 4341 MW [3], and this is just about a fraction of the estimated national energy requirement of 31,000 MW, with an expected 10% yearly increase [4].…”
