Data-Driven Image Processing for Onboard Optical Navigation Around a Binary Asteroid

Abstract: In this work data-driven image processing options for a CubeSat mission around a binary asteroid system are investigated. The methods considered belongs to two main branches of image processing methods: centroid and artificial intelligence. The former is represented by three variations of centroiding methods, the latter by three neural networks and one convolutional neural network. The first contribution of this work is an enhanced center of brightness method with a data-driven scattering law. This method is d… Show more

“…The process of designing close-proximity operations in a binary asteroid system is discussed at length in [13] while the preliminary mission analysis and GNC design of Milani which constituted the proposal and phase 0 of the mission are illustrated in [12]. A detailed description of the IP can be found in [17,18]. In [14] the important relationship between the trajectory design and orbit determination processes is shown.…”

“…Artificial Intelligence (AI) techniques can also be exploited to provide IP solutions or position estimates [13][14][15][16] completely bypassing traditional approaches. In doing so, however, they rely on large amount of data for training and they lack full explainability when compared to traditional methods.…”

“…From the aforementioned IP algorithm, it is possible to gather the CoF as a data-driven correction of the CoB, a data-driven-derived PA, and the range. A more detailed discussion of the Milani’s IP can be found in Pugliatti et al [ 41 ] and Pugliatti et al [ 42 ].…”
