Data Envelopment Analysis modeling for measuring knowledge management performance in Malaysian higher educational institutions

Abstract: The paper aims to propose a new Knowledge Management (KM) performance measurement model based on Data Envelopment Analysis (DEA). The proposed model was constructed using a two-level DEA model. It measures KM using 17 proxy measures correlated with the major KM processes. Data from 19 Malaysian higher educational institutions were collected using a questionnaire and analyzed using the proposed model. For every institution, the model provides a single KM performance score together with performance scores of the… Show more

“…The majority of studies in the higher education sector used the standard DEA to assess efficiencies of HEIs, such as Abbott and Doucouliagos (, ), Agasisti et al. (), Agasisti and Pohl (), Castano and Cabanda (), Fu and Huang (), Johnes (), Johnes and Johnes (), and Kuah and Wong (, ). However, measuring efficiency in the higher education sector is complicated as this is a diverse and multifaceted sector (Carrington et al., ; Emrouznejad and Thanassoulis, ).…”

“…On the other hand, the combination of DEA with either KM or TQM approaches has been noticed in the related literature. Kuah and Wong [23] applied a two-level DEA model for measuring the performance of Malaysian universities with regard to KM factors while Shirouyehzad et al [24] considered the criteria of KM and safety management as inputs and customer satisfaction and accident indicators as outputs of a DEA model for performance evaluation of 12 companies in the car industry in Esfahan. In addition, Salhieh and Abu-Doleh [25] indicated the impact of TQM on banks efficiency applying a DEA-based approach.…”
