Data Mining Projects, Discoveries and Statistics in Large Astronomical Archives: The Astrostatistics Group of the Spanish Virtual Observatory

Abstract

Part of the work carried out by the Spanish Virtual Observatory (SVO) is the development and test of techniques for the discovery of knowledge from large astronomical databases. The Virtual Observatory (VO) technology provides the astronomical community with archives containing large amounts of information which, analyzed with the proper tools, can lead to new scientific discoveries. In the SVO Astrostatistics Group we work on the application of techniques coming from the Statistic and Artificial Intelligence fields to large astronomical databases. In this paper we present some examples.
