Data on environmental analysis of natural antioxidant production from walnut husk by a solar photovoltaic-driven system as a replacement for potentially carcinogenic synthetic antioxidants

Abstract: In order to develop a product sustainably, multiple analyses, including comprehensive environmental assessment, are required. Solar-assisted production of walnut husk methanolic extract (WHME) as a natural antioxidant for biodiesel was scrutinized by using the life cycle assessment (LCA) approach. More specifically, the environmental sustainability of WHME antioxidant was evaluated and compared to that of propyl gallate (PG), the most widely used synthetic biodiesel antioxidant, under two scenarios. Additional… Show more

“…Piñón samples were prepared for analysis following the methodology and procedures detailed in previous work [37,38]. Spectral data were obtained at four different voltages (10,20,40, and 50 KV) to properly excite and determine elemental composition from sodium (n = 11) to lead (n = 82). Evaluation of EDXRF spectra and calculation of elemental concentrations were performed using the software supplied with the equipment.…”

“…In particular, vegetable sources are being intensely studied for their preventive and therapeutic uses in cancer, Parkinson's, Alzheimer's, atherosclerosis, liver injury, rheumatoid arthritis, type 2 diabetes, neurodegeneration, kidney failure and aging, and also as chemoprotective agents in cancer therapy [4][5][6][7][8]. In addition, these compounds have increased industrial applications; for example, they are used as ingredients in the formulation of dietary supplements, as reservatives for food and cosmetics, and to prevent the degradation of rubber and oil-derived compounds [9,10]. Furthermore, many vegetable antioxidants are being investigated as green inhibitors for corrosion protection of metals and alloys [11,12].…”

“…These results were in line with the findings of most studies conducted on biorefinery-based products. For example, In the study by Khounani et al [53,74], higher electricity consumption in synthetic antioxidant (propyl gallate) synthesis was one of the main contributors to human health and ecosystem quality damage categories. Likewise, another research ascertained that electricity, direct emissions of process, and ash landfill resulting from organosolv treatment of wheat straw biorefinery led to approximately 75-100% of the environmental impacts across all the impact categories [18].…”

“…11 Multiple assessments, including a full environmental evaluation, are required to produce a product in a sustainable manner. 12 Photovoltaic panels convert a very small amount of almost 5-25% of solar energy into electricity depending on photovoltaic panel efficiency while the rest 75-95% of incident energy is converted into heat. 13 This heat increases the core temperature of a photovoltaic panel.…”
