Data on resilience and trauma-related symptoms in Lithuanian children victims of violence

Abstract: The current data article presents a dataset about resilience and trauma-related outcomes in a group of Lithuanian children victims of violence, who took part in a resilience-focused therapy - the Assisted Resilience Approach Therapy (ARAT). The Child Youth Resilience Measure (CYRM-28) and the Trauma Symptom Checklist for Children (TSCC) were administered before and at the end of the treatment. “…Posttraumatic Stress Syndromes (PSS) along with emotional and behavioural impairments are the most frequently reported consequences for children's psychological functioning in the aftermath of military violence and displacement (Buchmüller et al, 2018;Karam et al, 2019). Most research conducted with child refugees and their caregivers has focused on psychological dysfunction and poor mental health following cumulative traumatic experiences (Hodes & Vostanis, 2019;Khan et al, 2019;Nasıroğlu et al, 2018;Norredam et al, 2018;Giordano et al, 2019aGiordano et al, , 2019bGiordano et al, , 2019c. Threatening events can induce higher and even incapacitating levels of arousal, anxiety, and posttraumatic stress in refugee children.…”

“…Recent advances within the diverse field of inquiry into children's adjustment to war (Liu et al, 2017) have led to shift in focus from individual to environmental and socioecological factors (Giordano et al, 2019a(Giordano et al, , 2019b(Giordano et al, , 2019cUngar, 2011). Accordingly, authors have begun to document the key role of environment, social relations, and culture-specific dimensions of resiliency in promoting functioning among war-affected children (Catani, 2018;Diab et al, 2018).…”

“…This study is related to an international 4-year child protection program run by the Bureau International Catholique de l’Enfance (BICE) in partnership with the OAK Foundation. The BICE commissioned the Resilience Research Unit (RiRes) of the Catholic University of the Sacred Heart of Milan to conduct a study of the resilience of Lithuanian children exposed to adversity, in addition to the training program of the Assisted Resilience Approach Therapy (ARAT), delivered to a team of professional psychotherapists assisting children exposed to different kinds of adversity in 25 day-care centers across Lithuania ( Giordano et al, 2018 , 2019b ). The study was reviewed and approved by the Scientific Committee of the Department of Psychology – Resilience Research Unit (RiRes) of the Università Cattolica del Sacro Cuore of Milan.…”

“…Resilience can, therefore, be considered a process that unfolds over time in the context of person–environment interactions (Egeland et al.,1993). This perspective suggests that it is a malleable process, and as such it is suitable for intervention (Giordano, Ragnoli & Brajda, 2019 ; Giordano, Ragnoli, Brajda et al., 2019 ; Giordano & Ungar, 2021 ). Recently, there has been interest in the development and evaluation of resilience building programs for healthcare workers (Grant et al., 2009 ), including populations like nurses in an oncology inpatient hospital unit (Pipe et al., 2012 ) and physicians at a tertiary care medical centre (Sood et al., 2011 ).…”
