Data visualisation and data mining technology for supporting care for older people

Abstract: The overall purpose of the research discussed here is the enhancement of home-based care by revealing individual patterns in the life of a person, through modelling of the "busyness" of activity in their dwelling, so that care can be better tailored to their needs and changing circumstances. The use of data mining and on-line analytical processing (OLAP) is potentially interesting in this context because of the possibility of exploring, detecting and predicting changes in the level of activity of people's move… Show more

“…Identifying the needs for each user group and how these needs are provided both physically and visually has to be resolved if AAL services are going to be utilised more fully in society. Gil et al (2007) suggest that the focus of visual representation should concentrate on living aspects that are regular, e.g. sleeping and eating, and have a relationship with wellbeing.…”

“…Research on enhancing home-based care through better understanding of activity in the dwelling, such that care can be tailored better to changing user needs and circumstances, has investigated how to visualise and present to stakeholders, such as residents and carers, information about changing domestic activity [13] [14]. The dialogue of care between older adults and their carers is an important part of the care process; social media of appropriate design could offer a framework within which that dialogue could occur, as long as requirements of privacy, security and anonymity are met.…”

“…Many systems under development both in academia [7,14,16,20] and industry [2], as well as some commercial systems [4,8] are already capable to provide essential monitoring services (for a survey of current stateof-the-art see references [3,6]). What is mostly missing is experience and systematic knowledge to intelligently assemble the components into robust architectures and practical, deployable systems.…”
