Database-driven distributed 3D simulation

Abstract: Distributed 3D simulations are used in various fields of application like geo information systems (GIS), space robotics or industrial automation. We present a new database-driven approach that combines 3D real-time simulation techniques with object-oriented data management. It consists of simulation clients that replicate from a central database object data as well as the data schema itself. The central database stores static and dynamic parts of a simulation model, distributes changes caused by the simulation… Show more

“…This encapsulation as KVPairs leads to easier DSL modelling concepts as the code generation for accessing simulation state as well as for simulation component data exchange can be represented by simply delivering the corresponding key for read and write access. Current virtual testbed data storage approaches even use full-fledged SQL databases [17][15] [5]. In contrast to our KVPool, such approaches would make code generation way more complicated as complete SQL-queries would need to be generated for accessing the simulation state.…”

“…As mentioned in the introduction, we also developed a database-driven approach for distributed 3D simulation [2]. Here, a central external database (generically called ExtDB) is used for data management, communication and versioning, providing a Central World Model (CWM) as introduced in [9].…”

“…Thus, an integrated approach for data management as well as communication should be favored. In [2], we propose such an approach where a central database is not only used to manage the shared simulation model but also to serve as an active communication hub.…”

“…As previously introduced in (Hoppen 2010) and (Hoppen 2012), an approach for database synchronization can be used to connect a 3D simulation system with a central database ( Figure 7). The 3D simulation system's runtime database is used as realtime capable cache that drives the 3D simulation itself.…”
