Dating of a large tool assemblage at the Cooper’s Ferry site (Idaho, USA) to ~15,785 cal yr B.P. extends the age of stemmed points in the Americas

Abstract: The timing and character of the Pleistocene peopling of the Americas are measured by the discovery of unequivocal artifacts from well-dated contexts. We report the discovery of a well-dated artifact assemblage containing 14 stemmed projectile points from the Cooper’s Ferry site in western North America, dating to ~16,000 years ago. These stemmed points are several thousand years older than Clovis fluted points (~13,000 cal yr B.P.) and are ~2300 years older than stemmed points found previously at the site. The… Show more

“…Riparian and wetland textile fiber well suited for basketry and cordage—such as tule, cattail, rushes, dogbane, and stinging nettle—likely thrived in these new landscapes. This dramatic period in ecological change coincides with the earliest evidence of humans populating the NGB by 14,500 years ago (Goebel et al 2008; Hockett et al 2017; Jenkins et al 2012; Shillito et al 2020) and the Columbia Plateau by approximately 16,000 cal BP (Davis et al 2022).…”

“…Our findings are supported by archaeological evidence from the UP in the Japanese archipelago during this period (see Supplementary text). Furthermore, our findings may offer an avenue for testing hypotheses for the initial dispersal of the UP East Eurasians to the Americas ( 29 , 3133 ) (see Supplementary text).…”

“…Indigenous oral traditions attest to the fact that humans have lived in the PNW since "time immemorial" and are supported by multiple archaeological datasets. Radiocarbon dated materials from Cooper's Ferry site (10IH73) in western Idaho confirm human occupation of the region by at least 16,000 years ago (Davis et al, 2022), and material from Rimrock Draw Rockshelter (35HA3855) in eastern Oregon extends that date to 18,250 years ago (O'Grady, 2022). Within the Cascades themselves, finds at Cascadia Cave (35LIN11) in the central western portion of the range, have been radiocarbon dated to 9,450 calibrated years before present (cal BP) (Baxter, 2023).…”
