Dating Results From Excavations in Quarry Tunnels Behind the Pyramid of the Sun at Teotihuacan

Abstract: In this article we summarize the results of an ongoing project designed to study the tunnels and caves of Teotihuacan, emphasizing those findings derived from the excavation of four extraction tunnels located immediately to the east of the Pyramid of the Sun. In particular, we present radiocarbon and obsidian-hydration dates from the Cueva de las Varillas, where 13 Mazapan-phase burials were found and which has substantial evidence for a post-Teotihuacan occupation. In addition, the Cueva del Pirul has produce… Show more

“…89-90). People at the Postclassic Otomí capital of Xaltocan, in the northwestern Basin of Mexico, collected and curated Early Classic figurines from Teotihuacan, as did people at Postclassic Teotihuacan (Brumfiel 2005;Manzanilla et al 1996;Overholtzer and Stoner 2011). Although a rejection of Teotihuacan state symbols followed the destruction of the Early Classic city, later peoples, from commoners to rulers, sought historical connections with Teotihuacan giving rise to antiquarianism.…”

“…4 reflects the apparent consensus, noted by Parsons and Gorenflo (in press), that Aztec II dates to c. A.D. 1200-1350. Some 32 recently obtained radiocarbon dates from Aztec II and mixed Aztec I/II contexts at ten different sites in the Basin of Mexico generally range between A.D. 1150 and 1400 (García Chávez 2004, tabla 3.5;Manzanilla et al 1996;Nichols and Charlton 1996;Parsons et al 1996). In fact, however, the majority cluster in the late 13th to the early 15th century, leading some authors to suggest a redating of Aztec II in the basin to as late as A.D. 1300-1450 (García Chávez 2004, fig.…”

“…Although there are dates reported by Healan (1989:164) from Tula and by Manzanilla et al (1996) from recent excavations at Teotihuacan, there are no published independent absolute age determinations available for early Postclassic ceramic complexes from rural sites. Evans and Freter (1989Freter ( , 1996, however, have undertaken hydration analysis of obsidian artifacts from excavations at the Aztec site of Cihuatecpan in the Teotihuacan Valley.…”
