DBI from gravity

Abstract: Abstract:We study the dynamics of gravitational lumps. By a lump, we mean a metric configuration that asymptotes to a flat space-time. Such lumps emerge in string theory as strong coupling descriptions of D-branes. We provide a physical argument that the broken global symmetries of such a background, generated by certain large diffeomorphisms, constrain the dynamics of localized modes. These modes include the translation zero modes and any localized tensor modes. The constraints we find are gravitational analo… Show more

“…In the original account, the decoupling limit of the coupled system of the type IIB supergravity and N = 4 SYM led to the duality between these two theories. It is possible to motivate the duality from an alternative viewpoint by starting with either one of those two theories and deducing the other [6][7][8][9][10], a view that has been reinforced by, e.g., the recent works of [11] and [12] in which the gauge degrees of freedom were obtained as moduli parameters of the gravity theory solutions. In that view the connection between the gauge and gravity degrees of freedom can be understood through conversions between the open and closed strings.…”

“…In other words, the fact thath mn = ∇ m n + ∇ n m satisfies the bulk and later the 3D field equations can be checked after the reduced action is obtained. 17 An explicit check is given in the Appendix. However, see the subtlety, therein explained, associated with gauge-fixing of the gauge parameter.…”

“…Although the AdS/CFT correspondence now has a well-established dictionary between the two dual theories involved, it was lacking the explicit dualization procedure that converts one to the other. Several such examples of the dualization procedures were studied in [11][12][13][14] (see also [15][16][17]). In particular, in [12][13][14], the gauge theory -whose explicit form was worked out in [13] -was understood as the generalized Goldstone degrees of freedom of the gravity theory.…”

“…Исходно супергравитация типа IIB и N = 4 суперсимметричная теория Янга-Миллса в пределе отсутствия взаимодействия становятся дуальными. Можно объяснить возникновение дуальности с другой точки зрения: вывести одну из этих двух теорий из другой [6]- [10]. Такой подход был подтвержден, например, в недавних работах [11], [12], где калибровочные степени свободы получались как параметры модулей решений теории гравитации.…”
