Objective: Despite significant need, those with severe mental illness (SMI) often remain underserved and understudied. Schizophrenia and borderline personality disorder (BPD) stand out as recurring SMI conditions that historically have been difficult to treat. Empirical evidence for therapeutic treatment for each disorder continues to grow and evolve. Group intervention should be incorporated into care due to the format’s empirical effectiveness and resourcefulness. Method: The current article aims to provide clinically relevant information on group modalities with the most substantial empirical support for first schizophrenia (Burlingame et al., 2020) and then BPD (McLaughlin et al., 2019), using recent meta-analytic findings. This is accomplished by first providing a brief history of group treatment for each disorder. Next, current American Psychiatric Association guidelines and current empirical evidence for group treatment of first schizophrenia and then BPD are reviewed. Results: Based on findings, special focus is given to social skills and cognitive remediation for the treatment of schizophrenia and dialectical behavioral therapy for the treatment of BPD. Empirical evidence, treatment content, vignettes, and resources for each of these modalities are provided. Other promising group treatment options are reviewed for the reader to consider. Given the vast diversity within the SMI population and the multicultural significance recognized today, diversity, equity, and inclusion considerations are provided on the highlighted group treatment options. Conclusions: It is the hope of the authors that the reader will have sufficient information and resources to begin an evidence-based group treatment. By doing so, practice and care for the SMI population will expand and improve.

Objective: Adapting mental health-care interventions to the race, ethnicity, or culture of the target group can enhance the acceptance and effectiveness of the treatment. Dialectical behavior therapy (DBT) is an evidence-based treatment that is principle-driven, rendering it well-suited for adaptations across cultural contexts. This article conducts a systematic review of the literature to determine the nature and extent of cultural adaptations of DBT to date. Method: We searched databases for original articles describing cultural adaptations of DBT, as applied to both (a) people of color within Western countries and (b) populations within non-Western countries. Consistent with the focus on descriptively characterizing extant DBT cultural adaptations, we included both published and nonpublished studies, as well as both observational and experimental studies. Results: Our search yielded 18 articles that met inclusion criteria. Of these articles, half described adaptations made with people and communities of color within the U.S. Most adaptations involved modifications to language, metaphors, methods, and context. Conclusions: Culturally adapted DBT has been implemented and accepted among several racial, ethnic, and cultural groups, although there is insufficient evidence to determine whether culturally adapted DBT is more efficacious than nonadapted DBT. We conclude with recommendations for best practices for DBT researchers and clinicians, and situate our findings among larger efforts to render existing evidence-based psychotherapies more optimal for people of color and people from non-Western countries.What is the public health significance of this article? Dialectical behavior therapy (DBT) may require cultural adaptation to be efficacious and accepted by all racial, ethnic, and cultural groups. The studies reviewed detail a number of cultural adaptations of DBT, most commonly in terms of language translation and addition of culturally congruent metaphors and sayings. The field must continue to both train culturally competent DBT clinicians and further adapt DBT to different cultural contexts.

This paper introduces an integrative (or braided) approach to Indigenous youth mental health, designed in response to a synthesis of knowledge from three systematic literature reviews and four informant consultations with mental health providers in various disciplines. The braided approach includes core principles of Indigenous Healing models (IH), Child and Youth Care (CYC) approaches, and Dialectical Behaviour Therapy (DBT) practices. The purpose of this approach is to best serve the mental and spiritual health needs of Indigenous youth across Canada during the COVID-19 pandemic. Findings of this research project informed the design and implementation of an online Indigenous youth mental health program, which is discussed in relation to the research.
