“…The fact that Pedro abdicated less than a month after his return shows that the journey was not successful in terms of its intended purpose, but this does not imply that it completely lacks importance. To the contrary, it seems that the emperor's journey to Minas, since it temporarily concentrated a series of events which acquired their own significance in this context, can be considered a moment of singular importance to analyze the role of the provinces in the configuration and the feasibility of the monarchical-constitutional state, a question of increasing interest in historiography (Silva, 2005;Slemian, 2006;oliveira, 2009). The article reconstitutes the journey of emperor Pedro I to the province of Minas Gerais in 1831, focusing on the interactions between local political elites and the central government, represented at that time by the emperor himself. It is part of a wider research field that has expanded the notion of politics by drawing on the concept of 'public space,' using it not only as a conceptual entity, but emphasizing its physical dimension as well. The main conclusion is that the expansion of liberals in the public space of Minas Gerais made the emperor's goal of politically isolating the exalted liberals a much more complicated task than expected. Suggested in the paper is that the increasing unpopularity of D. Pedro I after the journey and the subsequent abdication of the throne were due more to circumstances arising from the further implementation of the constitutional monarchy than to his supposed absolutism or anti-national attitude.

O presente artigo tem como objetivo lançar luz sobre a composição das bancadas mineiras na Câmara dos Deputados da 1ª (1826-1829) e 2ª (1830-1833) legislaturas do Império. Partindo do princípio de que ambas não constituíam um conjunto homogêneo, mas sim um locus de enfrentamento político em constante mudança, pretende-se analisar a maneira como setores provinciais se projetaram dentro do cenário político da Corte durante o Primeiro Reinado. Ao verificar que a montagem dessas bancadas derivou de uma confluência de elementos -entendimentos diversos sobre representação e organização do Estado, questões eleitorais e institucionais, alianças provinciais e interprovinciais, disputas entre grupos adversários, conflitos envolvendo perspectivas de negócios, mercado e ocupação de espaços na administração pública -, o artigo propõe, a um só tempo, realçar o caráter multifacetado desses agrupamentos políticos e questionar a ideia de "elites provinciais" indistintas, conflitantes tão somente na disputa por cargos e poder. RESUMOrepresentação e luta política na formação das bancadas mineiras para a 1ª (1826-1829) e a 2ª (1830-1833) legislaturas do Império From the province to the court: Representation and political struggle in the provinceThis article aims to shed light on the composition of Minas Gerais deputies in the Chamber of Deputies elected to the 1st (1826-1829) and 2nd (1830-1833) legislatures of the Brazilian Empire. Assuming that these groups were not a homogeneous set of men chosen by vote, but a locus of political confrontation in constant change, we intend to analyze here how provincial sectors were projected within the political scenario of the Court during the First Reign. When verifying the assembly of these benches came from a confluence of elements -diverse understandings about representation and organization of the State, electoral and institutional issues, provincial and interprovincial alliances, disputes between opposing groups, conflicts involving business prospects, market and occupation of spaces in the public administration -the article proposes, at the same time, to emphasize the multifaceted character of these political groupings and to question the idea of indifferent "elites provinciais", conflicting only in the contest for positions and power.
