DE-STAR: Phased-array laser technology for planetary defense and other scientific purposes

Abstract: Current strategies for diverting threatening asteroids require dedicated operations for every individual object. We propose a stand-off, Earth-orbiting system capable of vaporizing the surface of asteroids as a futuristic but feasible approach to impact risk mitigation. We call the system DE-STAR (Directed Energy System for Targeting of Asteroids and exploRation). DE-STAR is a modular phased array of laser amplifiers, powered by solar photovoltaic panels. Lowcost development of test systems is possible with ex… Show more

“…The flux on target (W∕m 2 ) at a fixed distance scales as the d 4 where d is the linear dimension of the array and thus it increases very rapidly with increased size. This system is useful for many other purposes, which are briefly mentioned in this article (and discussed in greater detail in other SPIE Optics & Photonics 2013 Proceedings papers, including Hughes et al 1 and Bible et al 2 ).…”

“…Model results indicate a solid theoretical foundation supporting the proposed method. 3,10,21,22,23 The model suggests that vaporization commences within 1 second; the thermal profile stabilizes at a level consistent with the vaporization temperature of Silica in vacuum. Temperatures within the illuminated spot rise to the point of being mass ejection limited, which is ~2 250 K in the center of the spot.…”
