Islamic Education’s formal teaching and learning for deaf students in schools are based on the Special Education Curriculum. In order to improve the achievement in the teaching and learning of deaf students, teachers should utilize teaching aids that are appropriate to the learning content and the students’ ability. The objective of this study is to explore the use of teaching aids by teachers teaching Islamic Education subjects to deaf students at the primary school level in Selangor. This study utilized the qualitative approach in the form of case studies by using the interview technique and document analysis to obtain data. Seven teachers from schools offering the Special Education Integration Program (Program Pendidikan Khas Integrasi) and one teacher from the Special Education School (Sekolah Pendidikan Khas) were selected as study respondents. The study respondents were selected based on the purposive sampling technique and had at least five years of teaching experience in Islamic Education subjects to deaf students. The findings showed there were several main types of teaching aids used by the respondents. They were printed materials, the use of Information and Communication Technology and by-product materials. The study also discovered several challenges faced by the respondents when using the teaching aids such as lack of appropriate and limited materials as well as the information and communication technology software was less friendly to deaf students in the learning of Islamic Education. This study contributes in terms of the recommendations of the production of appropriate teaching aids in order to assist teachers in teaching and helping to improve students’ achievement in Islamic Education learning.

Social studies learning in elementary school aims to enhance students's understanding of the concept of national heroes as a form of appreciation to their good deeds in the struggle for the nation. In so doing, students with special needs, especially deaf, could enhance their nationalism through images. They could visualize and communicate their ideas about historical figures and events through image that reflects their nationalism. Using descriptive qualitative study to the topic of My Hero, we conduct a research in an elementary school for special needs children (SDLB-B) Purwosari Kudus. The subject of this research are deaf students at grade 4 and 5 that consist of 7 students. This research found that def students' concept of nationalism was shaped by their ability to detect visual and communication potentials, optimalization of experience and observation of their environment, visual translation, attitudes and self development. Direct experience could enhance students' communication trough visual or images. KEYWORDS visual, hero, deaf students ABSTRAKPembelajaran Ilmu Pengetahuan Sosial (IPS) pada siswa sekolah dasar salah satunya bertujuan untuk meningkatkan pemahaman siswa tentang konsep pahlawan nasional sebagai bentuk apresiasi kepada jasa mereka dalam perjuangan untuk kepentingan bangsa. Untuk mencapai hal ini, siswa denga kebutuhan khusus, terutama tunarungu, dapat meningkatkan nasionalismenya melalui karya visual berupa gambar. Mereka dapat memvisualisasikan dan mengomunikasikan ide mereka tentang tokoh dan peristiwa sejarah melalui gambar yang merepresentasikan nasionalisme. Kajian ini merupakan hasil penelitian deskriptif kualitatif pada topik Pahlawanku untuk siswa kelas 4 dan 5 SDLB-B Purwosari Kudus yang terdir dari 7 siswa. Hasil penelitian ini menunjukkan bahwa konsep nasionalisme siswa tunarungu dibentuk oleh kemampuan mereka untuk mendeteksi potensi visual dan komunikasi, optimalisasi pengalaman dan pengamatan ingkungan sekitar, penerjemahan visual dan perkembangan sikap serta diri. Pengalaman langsung dapat memingkatkan komunikasi siswa melaui karya visual atau gambar.

PurposeThis study examines the hearing students' attitudes and behaviors towards deaf students in Malaysia using the intergroup contact approach.Design/methodology/approachPurposive sampling was used to recruit 439 hearing students at secondary schools. Hearing students were asked to fill in questionnaires that contained four measurements: contact with deaf people, sources of knowledge about deaf people, attitudes towards deaf people and behaviors toward deaf people. A serial mediation model was proposed to investigate the hypothetical mediating role of knowledge and attitudes toward deaf students in the relationship.FindingsThe results of this study showed that contact frequency is negatively associated with attitudes towards deaf people. However, such a relationship is suppressed, only when knowledge is included as a mediator. In addition, mediation analysis supports that sources of knowledge and attitudes about deaf people mediate the relationship between contact and behaviors toward deaf people. Moreover, the frequency of contact indirectly contributes to behaviors through knowledge and attitudes.Originality/valueThe findings indicate that increasing the contact between hearing and deaf students would improve hearing students' attitudes and behaviors towards deaf students. However, this is only when the contact can improve hearing students' knowledge about deaf people and deafness.
