Death and Near Death from Cardiac Arrest during the Boston Marathon

Abstract: The Boston Marathon has been run for 115 years during which there were three sudden cardiac arrests. The most recent was a near death avoided by rapid cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) and defibrillation. Awareness of the dangers of participating in a marathon, the risk factors associated with sudden death during competition, and the life-saving importance of rapid CPR and defibrillation are essential for participants and event organizers. Available records and reports of the three known cases of cardiac arr… Show more

“…The consensus from these reports is that acute cardiac events are rare [5,7], occur often [10], but not always due to acute coronary thrombosis [5], and that prompt resuscitation via bystanders or professionals is a critical element in survival [5,7]. Furthermore, the observation that 69% of the events occurred in the last quartile 6 miles of the race [5] suggests that this portion requires special attention from emergency personnel.…”

“…Others [7] reviewed three cases of death or cardiac arrest that occurred during the BAA. These include the collapse and subsequent death of a 44-year-old man in 1973 published in Annals of Internal Medicine, the death of a 61-year-old man with suspected ASCVD in 1996 [8,9], and the resuscitation of a 63-year-old man in 2010.…”
