Death, end-stage renal disease and renal function decline in patients with diabetic nephropathy in French cohorts of type 1 and type 2 diabetes

Abstract: Aims/hypothesis Microvascular complications are a common feature of diabetes but additional research is needed regarding diabetic nephropathy endpoints in type 1 and type 2 diabetes. Methods We compared 277 type 1 diabetes patients with 942 type 2 diabetes patients, with clinical proteinuria and no endstage renal disease (ESRD) at baseline, prospectively followed for death, ESRD and decline in estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR, all available measures). ; p=0.512). Conclusions/interpretation In diabeti… Show more

“…Microalbuminuria is not only a risk factor for end stage renal failure in diabetes but also an important marker of mortality in diabetic populations 1. ADA has stressed for early detection of microalbuminuria in diabetes patients as early treatment of microalbuminuria retard the progression of diabetic nephropathy 6.…”

“…As the burden of diabetes is increasing worldwide, more and more patients with diabetic nephropathy are surfacing. It has also been associated with increased morbidity and mortality and it is one of the most common cause of end stage renal disease(ESRD) and initiation of renal replacement therapy 1,2…”

“…Peritoneal dialysis does not need to establish vascular access, has little impact on hemodynamics, so elderly patients with diabetes tend to choose PD. Arteriosclerosis and the incidence of cardiovascular ,cerebrovascular events is often occurred in diabetic nephropathy [15,16]. Age is also a risk factor of vascular calci cation [17].…”

“…15.933 Caucasian patients with type 2 diabetes (defined by the American Diabetes Association criteria), attending consecutively 19 hospital-based Diabetes Clinics of the National Health Service throughout Italy in years 2007–2008 were recruited [16]. Next to the French SURDIAGENE study [17]. the German DIACORE project is another ongoing project with similarities to PROVALID [18].…”
