Decadal demographic trends of a long-lived temperate encrusting sponge

Abstract: Demographic data play a central role in determining the overall dynamics of species and forecasting the effects of global change. We examined a decadal pattern of population dynamics and its underlying mechanisms in a population of the encrusting sponge Crambe crambe. A photographic series monitored yearly for 14 yr (1993 to 2007) was analyzed. A total of 133 genets and 157 ramets were individually identified and followed over 14 yr to record their fates: survivorship, partial mortality, recruitment via larvae… Show more

“…Instead, biological factors (growth rates, recruitment, competition and successional patterns) should be the major driver of patterns found at the site level (or, alternatively, should explain most of the variability found at the site level). As mentioned previously, coralligenous (Garrabou 1999;Linares et al 2007;Teixidó et al 2009Teixidó et al , 2011. Additionally, these species generally display a limited dispersal capacity (Uriz 1998;Duran 2003;Abbiati et al 2009;Ledoux et al 2010b).…”

“…However, the monitored sponges proved to be very dynamic organisms that were able to undergo fragmentation, contraction, or merging and showed seasonal growth trends, with peaks generally occurring during spring or summer (Sarà, 1970;Ayling, 1983;Pansini & Pronzato, 1985;Turon et al, 1998;Garrabou & Zabala, 2001;De Caralt et al, 2008;Teixidó et al, 2009;Cardone et al, 2010).…”

“…The sponge life cycle includes four principal stages: (i) recruitment, (ii) growth, (iii) fusion and fragmentation, and (iv) mortality of individuals (Teixidó et al, 2009). In T. anhelans, an increase in the number of individuals is observed in spring, from March to May.…”
