[1] We report glacial varves in the sediment of Lake Xinluhai, Tibetan Plateau. Independent data of 137 Cs and 210 Pb indicate that these are annually deposited varves. Varves appear as rhythmic units of light-colored silt layer capped by a dark clay layer under microscope. Varve thickness in Lake Xinluhai is sensitive to precipitation because sediment accumulation is strongly affected by monsoon rainfall in the area. A general decreasing trend can be observed in the varve thickness over the past 160 years. Spectral analyses of the varve record are dominated by cycles which are similar to ENSO periodicities. It implies that the decreasing trend of the South Asia monsoon may be linking with ENSO. Spatially, the decreasing trend can be observed across different proxy records in the south of the Tibetan Plateau. Although arguments still remain for the dynamic mechanisms and spatial rainfall difference, the South Asian summer monsoon could be weakened due to rising temperatures.

BackgroundWhile the impact of climate fluctuations on the demographic histories of species caused by changes in habitat availability is well studied, populations of species from systems without geographic isolation have received comparatively little attention. Using CO1 mitochondrial sequences, we analysed phylogeographic patterns and demographic histories of populations of five species (four gastropod and one amphipod species) co-occurring in the southwestern shore of Lake Baikal, an area where environmental oscillations have not resulted in geographical isolation of habitats.ResultsSpecies with stronger habitat preferences (gastropods B. turriformis, B. carinata and B. carinatocostata) exhibit rather stable population sizes through their evolutionary history, and their phylogeographic pattern indicates moderate habitat fragmentation. Conversely, species without strong habitat preference (gastropod M. herderiana and amphipod G. fasciatus) exhibit haplotype networks with a very abundant and widespread central haplotype and a big number of singleton haplotypes, while their reconstructed demographic histories show a population expansion starting about 25-50 thousand years ago, a period marked by climate warming and increase in diatom abundance as inferred from bottom-lake sedimentary cores.ConclusionsIn agreement with previous studies, we found that species reacted differently to the same environmental changes. Our results highlight the important role of dispersal ability and degree of ecological specialization in defining a species' response to environmental changes.

“…Millennial-scale, abrupt climate oscillations known as Dansgaard-Oeschger (D-O) cycles were first described from Greenland ice-cores (Johnsen et al 1972) and include relatively warm interstadials (GIs) and cold stadials (GSs; Rasmussen et al 2014). D-O cycles have been documented in proxy records from around the globe (Harrison & Sanchez-Goñi 2010), including ice-core records from both poles (Dansgaard et al 1993;North Greenland Ice Core Project Members 2004;EPICA Community Members 2006;WAIS Divide Project Members 2015), deep-sea sediments (Bond et al 1993;McManus et al 1999), loess (Porter & An 1995;Sun et al 2011), lacustrine sediments (Goldberg et al 2007;Tierney et al 2008), and speleothems (Wang et al 2001(Wang et al , 2008Genty et al 2003;Sp€ otl et al 2006;Chen et al 2016). Unlike the palaeo-records from these depositional environments, marine sediments of marginal seas have a unique capability to simultaneously reflect environmental changes in the oceans and in adjacent landmasses.…”

High-resolution analyses of pollen and diatoms in core LV 53-29 from the northwestern Japan Sea trace climate, vegetation and oceanographic changes during the past 120 ka. The age model for the core was based on tephrochronology, colour lightness and magnetic susceptibility and was used to aid correlation with Dansgaard-Oeschger cycles (warm Greenland interstadials (GIs) and cold Greenland stadials (GSs)). The palynological and diatom data from this core record the changing influences of the East Asian monsoon, eustatic fluctuations in sea level, and the impact of variations in the direction and intensity of marine currents. Increases in Quercus and Cryptomeria pollen reflect GIs. The highest values of Cryptomeria were recorded during Marine Isotope Stage (MIS) 5 and were associatedwith an increase in the intensityof the summer monsoon. The increase in Larix pollen is an indicatorof GSs, and it occurs in all marine isotopic stages. Changes in diatom records indicate that oceanographic conditions in the northwestern Japan Sea differed from its southern and eastern regions. An increase in the cold-water and polyhalobous Rhizosolenia hebetata indicates GIs, although the surface water temperatures were colder than today with normal salinity. Species of the genus Chaetoceros, which is characteristic of GSs, were abundant during MIS 2. The predominance of Chaetoceros taxa and the high total abundance of diatoms may reflect regional upwelling conditions. The absence of brackish-water species at this time indicates a slight freshening of the surface water. The study of pollen, spores and diatoms in sediments from the northwestern Japan Sea illustrates the great potential of these proxies for identifying abrupt climate oscillations preserved in high-temporal resolution marine records, particularly those related to interstadial and stadial conditions.
