Deciphering the patterns of genetic admixture and diversity in southern European cattle using genome‐wide SNPs

Abstract: The divergence between indicine cattle ( Bos indicus ) and taurine cattle ( Bos taurus ) is estimated to have occurred approximately 250,000 years ago, but a small number of European cattle breeds still display shared ancestry with indicine cattle. Additionally, following the divergence of African and European taurine, the gene flow between African taurine and southern European cattle has also been proposed. However, the extent to which non‐European cattle ancestry… Show more

“…5 and Additional file 8 : Figure S5, and based on the results of the previous studies (e.g. [ 34 , 63 ]), we assume that introgression of indicine ancestry into Anatolian and some Mediterranean cattle occurred. To test this putative indicine introgression, which could have occurred along the migration route from Anatolia, Greece and South East Europe to the southern foothills of the Alps and North West Europe, we calculated the D-statistics.…”

“…BovineHD genotypes of the other 13 taurine and indicine breeds were kindly made available by Tad Sonstegard (previously unpublished data). BovineHD genotypes of seven additional breeds from Iberia, Italy, and Eastern Europe were available from Upadhyay et al 14,39 (Table 1). SNP pruning of genotype data was performed using PLINK v1.7 40 .…”
