Deciphering the Symbiotic Significance of Quorum Sensing Systems of Sinorhizobium fredii HH103

Abstract: Quorum sensing (QS) is a bacterial cell-to-cell signaling mechanism that collectively regulates and synchronizes behaviors by means of small diffusible chemical molecules. In rhizobia, QS systems usually relies on the synthesis and detection of N-acyl-homoserine lactones (AHLs). In the model bacterium Sinorhizobium meliloti functions regulated by the QS systems TraI-TraR and SinI-SinR(-ExpR) include plasmid transfer, production of surface polysaccharides, motility, growth rate and nodulation. These systems are… Show more

“…In contrast to that found in R. leguminosarum and S. meliloti, S. fredii HH03 EPS production is not influenced by QS mechanisms since this strain lacks a functional copy of the expR gene [157]. In contrast, the two QS systems identified in strain NGR234 have a positive effect on EPS production, meanwhile they repress genes involved in motility and chemotaxis [158].…”

However, the two QS systems identified in strain NGR234 have a positive effect on EPS production and repress genes involved in motility and chemotaxis [166].…”

“…In S. fredii , the traI and sinI genes are essential for the biosynthesis of short- and long-chain AHLs, respectively [ 98 ]. Indeed, no 3-OXO-C8-HSL was detected from the traI and traI exoF mutants of SF2 (Fig.…”
