Decision-making method for assessing performance of large levee alignment

Abstract: International audienceLevees are large alignment civil engineering works with a performance that is assessed with great difficulty due to its longitudinal variability. We hereby suggest that a decision-making support procedure should be identified, built and implemented so as to split levee alignments into homogeneous sections and identify them according to their performance level. Our work is focused on defining actions for the purpose of solving the decision-making problem with regard to large alignment work… Show more

“…Based on these variables, the functional model provides a representation of levee failure modes as sequences of successive failures of technical functions according to functional criteria and their related basic indicators (Vuillet et al ., ). Figure shows an example of how the overflowing levee failure mode can be modelled on the basis of its specific functional criteria.…”

“…According to Vuillet, Peyras, Serre and Diab (2012), multi-criteria methods may be useful for intermediate aggregations about the performance of relevant criteria, but expert-based rules are more suitable to get an overall judgement about the functional status. By indicating the functional status at parameter level instead of aggregating the parameters score in a global index, compensation of extremes or errors in one parameter by the other two parameters is avoided.…”

“…The method developed by Irstea to estimate structural failure probability of levees defines 3 groups of variables to model structural failure scenarios of levees (figure 5) [8]: -basic indicators: these are fundamentals that detail the information to be considered for determining each function criterion. They are interpreted or inferred from data such as measurements, observations, computations or material state: visual data, historical data, geotechnical tests, modelling etc; -function criteria: these are decision-making items used to assess levee component performance.…”
