Decision-making tools and the development of expertise in child protection practitioners: are we ‘just breeding workers who are good at ticking boxes’?

Abstract: A B S T R AC TConcern about the decision-making abilities of practitioners in child protection has led to the development and implementation of increasingly structured assessment tools, many based on forms of risk assessment. The positive and negative effects of such tools on practice have been widely researched and debated. This paper presents the findings from ethnographic research about the use of a particular set of decision-making tools that provide insights into how tools might affect the professional de… Show more

“…This builds mainly on the work of Dreyfus and Dreyfus (1986) that depicts a five-stage model illustrating the gradual process of the learner from 'novice' to 'expert' practitioner. The earlier stages are characterised by relying on and following context-free rules while the social workers who have attained expertise employ more situational-based skills and are more likely to engage in a 'critically reflective process' (Fook et al, 2000, p. 189) when interpreting information (see also Gillingham, 2011). The model links well with the current longitudinal research design and enables an exploration of students' perceptions and changes over time (see also Carpenter, 2011;Preston-Shoot & McKimm, 2012).…”

“…Ethnographic approaches continue to be used effectively in relation to social work judgement (e.g. Gillingham 2011, Saltiel 2013 and provide a means for identifying, describing and contextualizing the ways in which professional judgement is carried out.…”
